AT&T to Have Better Service with Addition of T-Mobile

Before the iPhone was added to Verizon‘s lineup, one of the reasons not to get the iPhone has nothing to do with the hardware, but the carrier that it was exclusively on, AT&T. For this reason, people opted to go with Verizon and Android devices. However, AT&T recently bought T-Mobile, which will most likely be finalized within the next year. With this, AT&T CEO Randall Stephenson has said that service on the network will drastically go up in a recent interview with BusinessWeek.

The purchase will allow AT&T to have up to a 30% improvement in service throughout New York City, which has spotty AT&T coverage from my personal experience. The extra T-Mobile antennas will help drastically improve the network’s strength and hopefully its already very quick data speeds.

The merger between AT&T and T-Mobile will create a GSM monopoly in US, as the two largest GSM carriers in the US will be joining forces and creating the largest carrier in the US, leapfrogging over current number one carrier Verizon.

Whether or not this sways the decision of people to choose AT&T over Verizon remains to be seen. While many people are happy with their AT&T iPhones, there are plenty that are not happy. Will this merger leave the unsatisfied? It remains to be seen.

How will this affect the smart phone industry?
