Mark Zuckerberg famously said a couple months back at one of Facebook‘s press events that Facebook would never create a mobile app for the iPad because the iPad is simply not mobile. Now it seems as if he wants to take back those words as it is rumored that Facebook is poised to release an official iPad app.

This comes in the light of the rumors that Facebook is currently in the works of creating a photo sharing app for the iPhone. I’m guessing that Zuckerberg decided to kill two birds with one stone.

If Facebook does create an iPad app, it would seemingly strengthen the relationship between the two companies.

“People briefed on Facebook’s plans say that in coming weeks the company plans to introduce a free iPad application that has been carefully designed and optimized for the tablet.

The app has been in production at Facebook for almost a year, going through several design iterations, and is now in the final stages of testing, according to these people, who declined to be named because they were discussing confidential product plans.”

Facebook released their iPhone app nearly the same day that Apple announced and released the App Store. People have been clamoring to Facebook to create an iPad optimized app to no avail. According to the New York Times, this app is a complete overhaul of the Facebook app and has been overseen by Zuckerberg himself.

“People who have seen the application said it has a slick design that has been tailored for the iPad and its touchscreen interface. Facebook developers and designers have also overhauled the Facebook Chat and Facebook Groups features for the application. And the app will go beyond the features available on the Facebook Web site by allowing users to shoot and upload photos and videos directly from the iPad’s built-in cameras.

“The photo and video experience is amazing, offering full resolution and full-screen images,” said a person who has seen the app.”

According to the source, Apple will prominently featuring the overhauled application that will be released within the next couple weeks. The application also may make the iPad more desirable than other Android tablets purely because of the app.
