The iPhone gained 720p video recording functionality in the iPhone 4 and sported what critics regarded as one of the best cameras on a smartphone. According to a report from Engadget, Apple is going to be stepping up the game on the next iPhone with a new 1080p camera sensor.

Omnivision, the supplier of the iPhone 4 camera sensor has unveiled a new camera that is 5 mp and is capable of capturing 1080p video. This new camera from Omnivision is thing enough to fit into both the new iPod Touch and iPhone 4. A camera of this capability would be a huge boost to the iPhone 4.

This comes following recent rumors from Apple that the new iPhone will have the flash move to the other side of the iPhone back plate allowing for less flash to wash out the pictures on the next generation iPhone.

There are additional rumors saying that the next iPhone will sport an 8mp camera so it’s most likely that this new OmniVision camera sensor is not the next iPhone, however the improvement of OmniVision’s new cameras is a signal of great things to come in the next iPhone.

What kind of camera do you want to see the next iPhone sport?
