While the iPhone’s apps may be the talk of the town, not all of them are as up to date as they should be. Many users have noted that the default Maps app could be a bit better than it already it. Google’s Maps is the king of the hill in this respect however speculations about numerous updates to iOS 5 have some people wondering what’s in store for Apple’s Maps app.

With the release of iOS 5 pending, lots of people are beginning/continuing to speculate what new features will be included in that release. One rumor suggests that the Maps app will get a much needed update and will feature turn by turn GPS routing similar to that of your TomTom or Garmin GPS units.

Currently, the Maps app will give you directions from one location to another however it’s pretty bare bones compared to that of Google’s Honeycomb OS or even that of a normal GPS unit. Basically, you have a line shown on your phone’s display of where you need to go and you do your best to follow it. Not a great means of navigating however it does get the job done. If news of the updated Maps app offering turn by turn directions, then that’ll put that app, as well as the iPhone, on a whole new plane.

While many of us don’t necessarily use our iPhone’s as navigation devices, were this feature to be included in the next iOS update, it would allow almost most people to ditch their TomTom or Garmin GPS units and use their iPhone in yet another capacity. First your iPhone was a cool phone, then a gaming unit and now, perhaps, as a navigation unit. This is great news for those of us with unlimited data plans however not so much for those that are capped. Seeing as how the iPhone would need to constantly update with information, it would probably put a huge dent in your data consumption as a result.

I, for one, am looking forward to this and hoping it to be true. As my Garmin is on it’s last legs, it would be great if I could use my iPhone 4 as a GPS navigation unit and have one less car charger in my ride.
