Music Missing on iPhone After iOS 4.2 Update? It’s just a bug.

If you just updated to iOS 4.2 on your iPhone, and noticed your music is gone, don’t worry you’re not alone.  The folks over at Tipb have been getting an explosive amount of questions regarding the issue, and have found a fix.

Rest assured, your music is not gone; you just can’t see it.

There is a bug, which prevents the music from being displayed properly, although its pretty scary, especially if you are like me and have 9 or 10 days worth of music on your iPhone, as I said, there is a solution, and it’s a simple fix.

  1. Plug in your iPhone to your Mac or PC.
  2. When your iPhone pops up on the iTunes side bar look for the content listings underneath it, if they aren’t displayed, click the little triangle on the left.
  3. Click on music, pick any song and play it in iTunes.
  4. Sync your iPhone.

After the sync, launch the iPod app on your iPhone and all your music should be back, exactly as you left it prior to the update, scared, lonely maybe, but un-touched. I hope this helps, let us know any other problems you are having and we will see what we can do to get ya back on track!

      is your iPhone a 3G, 3GS or iPhone 4?

    • Greg says:

The first thing I can suggest with out actually knowing which phone you use is to make sure that your computer is authorized to sync with the iPhone after the update, that may be your issue issue. I am using the iTunes 10.1 beta which has expired so I can really walk you through it right now, but i will download the latest version tonight and get back with you on how to do this. no worries, we’ll get ya back up and running. :)

Thanks for this – it’s a lot better than the full reset I did with 4.0 when I saw this happen last time!

OMG thank you so much dude!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  5. David says:

I have a similar problem, but only with about 100 or so of my songs. They show up in iTunes as being on my phone and are counted in the iPhone summary graph in iTunes. They even show up in my phone’s Spotlight search, but aren’t actually on my phone (as far as I can tell). I’ve already tried re-syncing and a complete restore, but the same songs are still missing from my phone! I have an iPhone 3GS.

  6. Bri says:

Can I ask if I can get my ringers back?

  7. Zack says:

It did not fix mine. There are no songs for me to play in the music folder. There are no songs anywhere!
