Yet Another RedSnOw untethered Jailbreak update

I posted a few weeks ago that MuscleNerd said RedSnOw untethered would be here before Christmas. Two days ago Comex @ CDev stated he was not sure the new RedSnOw jailbreak would hit before Christmas after all. It seems that the jailbreak may not make by tomorrow, but that at the latest Sunday, or so my sources say.

That’s right, I’ve read that the jailbreak could hit tonight, tomorrow night, or Sunday night, but that it should definitely be here by then.

On CDev’s blog, they have said that an updated version of RedSnOw will be released that implements a “backup plan” and delivers an untethered jailbreak for the newer, and mid model iPod touch, iPhones, and the iPad.

It seems like there maybe a lining of bad news to this release however, as things appear to be quite rushed to get this release out. It looks like the Dev Team is looking for Beta testers to run the RedSnOw untethered jailbreak, to make sure all the bugs are ironed out.

If you would like to be a tester here is what you need to know:

“(If you have an iPhone 3G, or an old-bootrom ipt2g or iPhone 3GS, you already have an untethered jailbreak!  Just use the latest public redsn0w.)

To keep things manageable, this will be a Mac-only test program.  We also request that any volunteers *NOT* need the ultrasn0w unlock (in case things go very wrong).

Right now, the “backup plan” requires that you have the 4.2b3 IPSW on your Mac, and that Cydia has your 4.2b3 SHSH hashes.  Please don’t pirate that 4.2b3 IPSW!  (We’re also working on a way that this technique might apply to all those with 4.1 IPSWs, but that’s not the first goal right now.)

If you fit all the above qualifications, please follow @redsn0w_testers on twitter for announcements, and use the comments section on the blog for feedback.”

So to recap, the obvious good news is, that we should have an untethered jailbreak released by the end of the weekend or early in the week, the bad news is, it may have some issues at first, as will all software’s first releases.

What do you want to do? Are you too excited to wait any longer? Let us know in comments!

to answer your question, no, but yes. Before you update, make sure to sync your device, and be prepared for the fact that you could lose them no matter what. Make sure you have appsync4.0 and appbackup from cydia, and you should be able to update with out losing your jailbroken apps as long as you re-jailbreak. You should be aware that many apps are not universally compatible. that means there are still alot of apps that are not working with 4.2, and some work with bugs. For example. “MakeitMine” which allows you to set your status bar to say what ever you want, does not work with my iPad on 4.2. Also “Activator” which is used with various apps, like SBsettings, currently has bag that crashes my iPad every time i shake it.
