Semitethered Jailbreak for iOS 5 HOW TO and Explanation

Posted In Jailbreak News - By Joon On Saturday, October 22nd, 2011 With 1 Comment

Until now, iOS 5 jailbreaks with RedSn0w have been only tethered, meaning that we would have to reconnect our phone every time we wanted to turn our device on after a reboot or turning it off. Untethered jailbreaks are what most people desire, the ability to turn on and off you iPhone at will without having to worry about connecting your phone to your computer every time you want to turn on your phone.

Today, a release of a semi-tethered jailbreak was let loose in Cydia. The tweak lets you turn on your phone after a reboot without having to be near a computer with a few caveats. Here is the how-to.

Step 1: Tether Jailbreak your iOS 5 device with RedSn0w.

Step 2: Add http://thebigboss.org/semitether to your Cydia sources.

Step 3: Install SemiTether and reboot!

Note: You can also follow a full video tutorial, here.

As mentioned, there are a few caveats though.

  • Phone will reboot to Home screen
  • Can use every stock app on iPhone except Mail and Safari until boot tether
  • Can’t use Cydia, or any jailbreak apps and tweaks until boot tether
  • Phone can take longer to boot

Will you be jailbreaking iOS 5 now with a semi tether? Let me know in the comments below.
