Where is that Siri Port?
One of the major things since the iPhone 4S launch is the question of whether or not Siri would be ported to earlier generation device. It was determined that none of the hardware on the iPhone 4S made it impossible to port Siri to the iPhone 4. Instead, it was a couple of lines of code that was needed in order for Siri to work on the iPhone 4.
Since then, many people have been claiming that they ported Siri to their iPhone 4 or iPod Touch 4. While the only people with legitimate proof that they ported Siri are hackers Steve Stroughton-Smith and Chpwn, people such as Jackoplane on Twitter have been claiming for weeks that they have ported Siri to their iPhone 4.
The reason behind Chpwn and Stroughton-Smith not releasing their port is this. It’s simply not legal for them to do it. They have explained that in order to legally port it to your iPhone 4, you need a jailbroken iPhone 4S, and if you have an iPhone 4S, what’s the point of porting Siri to the iPhone 4? In order for the hackers to get it onto an iPhone 4 without an iPhone 4S, they would have to redistribute modded versions iOS 5. Because the software is legal property of Apple’s, the act of doing this would be illegal and could lead to legal action from Apple against the two hackers. Because they are smart people, the hackers have decided not to do this.
What is different about people like Jackoplane is that he has not provided any physical evidence that he has even done anything remotely related to porting Siri to the iPhone 4. As a result, he has gotten a lot of haters via Twitter as a result of not showing any evidence.
While you can count me in as one of those who are excited for the Siri port for the iPhone 4 or iPad 2, I cannot stand the number of people who have claimed that they have ported the new voice command system onto their previous generation device.
