Update! RedSnOw untethered jailbreak

It looks like the Dev-Team just released RedSnOw 0.7.9b6!

Over the Christmas holiday, the Dev-Team released an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 4, iPod touch 4, and the iPad, running on iOS 4.2. Upon releasing this jailbreak, they stated it was for testers only, and for good reason.

I performed this jailbreak at beta 3 and was successful, with not much trouble, however, I jailbreak iPhones, iPods, and even iPads on almost a daily basis. For most people, this jailbreak was next to impossible to perform, up until beta 4.

Betas 1, 2 and 3 for RedSnow 0.7.9 all required downloading a file calledUsbmuxd and then going into your command terminal, and doing a few tricky things.

As of beta 4, this was no longer the case, it was much easier to perform for most people, however, lingering problems still existed, such as Bluetooth being “not available” and skype not working. Well I have some good news.

Beta 5 was released just a day or two ago, and with it came returned Bluetooth ability. As you can guess, beta 6 fixes Skype.

On the Dev-Teams blog they said of beta 5:

“The fifth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!).  Bluetooth is now working (and any sandbox-related issues should be resolved too).”

And of beta 6:

“The sixth beta is now available (testers ONLY please!).  This version fixes Skype (and as expected all along, the Skype issue turns out to be unrelated to sandbox patches).”

Also, prior to beta 5, there has not been a known windows version for this jailbreak, well at beta 5 the Dev-Team stated that there is a working Windows version of this untethered jailbreak, however it is unbelievably slow, so it will not be released until some issues with it can be solved.

The Dev-Team says that with Bluetooth, and Skype finally working properly, they are now working on a way to port this jailbreak back to iOS 4.1.

I cannot stress enough that this jailbreak is for testers and developers only, as it is still in beta testing, and there could be major problems that could be permanent.

One side note:

This jailbreak requires use of the iOS 4.2b3 IPSW which was only given to Developers. This means that if your are not a developer, you have to pirate this software. The dev-team makes it abundantly clear they do not want anyone pirating this IPSW, and will not provide assistance to anyone who obtains the software in that way. That said, if you want more information about this jailbreak, check out the Dev-Teams website

Yes it is currently only for Mac. THe dev team has said they do have a version for windows, but it is currently not good enough to be released. It takes an extremely long amount of time to use it, hours even. So until they are able to speed it up, they said they will not be releasing it. I hope this answers your question, and I’m sorry that we cannot help at this time.
