Now, the Mac has been “officially” infected by some type of virus. Macs used to be “immune” to viruses, but it is now clear that they are not. The new virus is a fake antivirus scanner.

The reason that Macs were unable to be infected by any type of virus was because not many people had Macs, but now that Apple is getting bigger and bigger, and most PC’s now have some type of antivirus software installed on them, hackers and virus developers have turned to Apple Mac computers.

The virus is cleverly named “Mac Defender” or “Mac Protector”. Usually, you start surfing the web on Safari, and the window pops up. Usually from Google, Yahoo, or any other search engine. It looks a lot like a finder window, but you are still inside Safari. It then asks you to download the Mac Defender program because your computer is “infected” with exactly sixteen viruses. Once you download the program, you unzip the file and it “scans” your computer and “detects” viruses. Obviously these “viruses” are fake because sixteen viruses have not even been discovered for Mac! Any old mac owner would know that!

Once the viruses are detected, the program asks you to purchase a license key, which cost around fifty dollars I think. It will ask you to put in your credit card information which any person who has a computer should know NOT to EVER enter your credit card information on a mysterious program. Sometimes it will even ask you to put in another credit card because the one you entered “didn’t work”. Once again, NEVER EVER enter your credit card information unless you’ve confirmed from numerous sources that the program is safe.

To delete the virus, it is as simple as deleting the program, and zip file and clearing the trash bin. PLEASE make sure you DO NOT enter your credit card information. This could be very dangerous, and you could be paying for things you did not purchase. Please beware of this program on the internet, and immediately exit out of Safari if it redirects you to fake scanner.
